Training camp is coming up this week, so if you are a hockey fan or want to learn about the game, this is a great opportunity as it’s free. You do a ticket to enter, so email customerservice@winterhawks.com to let them know so tickets can be held for you. The dates are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 3-7pm and Sunday from 9am-1pm. Parking is free on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. There will be a heavy charge on Saturday owing to a concert at the Moda Center of $20, so people are encouraged to use MAX.
There are three games to take in with 2 25 minute running clocks and three on three action to break any ties.
The Portland Winterhawks Booster Club will be a part of the action at Sunday’s game if you want to sign up or see some of their wares. They will be next to the WAHA table at Entry AA.
The preseason starts right after that, with games in Everett for the annual Holiday Classic and the Tri-City Tournament the week after. The Hawks will play four preseason games, with the fifth against Seattle now canceled in Kennewick.
The Hawks will play twice in Everett on Friday, September 10 at 2pm vs. Seattle and Sunday, September 12 when they take on the Everett Silvertips at 4pm in the final game.
The action moves to Kennewick with games on Friday, September 17, when they play the Spokane Chiefs at 3pm, and then a matchup versus the Tri-City Americans at 6pm on Saturday, September 18.
The regular season starts in Kennewick on October 1st when the Hawks travel to Tri-City for their home opener; The Hawks will open at home on Saturday, October 2 against Seattle.
All home games for Portland will be contested at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
There will be just 55 players at Training Camp this year due to border and COVID restrictions, so fans will have a much tighter view when it comes to seeing who will compete for the coveted spots on the Winterhawks roster. It will also be your first time to see Marek Alscher from the Czech Republic as one of two imports on the roster, with the other being Jonas Brondberg.
Former Portland Winterhawk player Evan Weinger has signed a new deal with the San Jose Barracuda, the American Hockey League Farm Team of the San Jose Sharks. Two other Winterhawks will be part of that organization with the recently signed Nick Cicek, the Winterhawks captain in the shortened season last year, and Joachim Blichfeld who joined the Barracuda in 2018 as a full-time player. All hope to find a way to be on the Sharks roster at some point. Blichfeld has played with the Sharks in 8 games over two seasons, scoring one goal and accumulating 14 minutes in the penalty box.
