The 2024 Portland Timbers Summer Transfer Window Shopping List

Following a rough start to the season, the Portland Timbers have turned it around lately. They have won four of their last six games, which has put them back in the Western Conference playoff picture. The attack has also continued to fire on all cylinders, with key players like Evander, Jonathan Rodriguez, and Felipe Mora combining for twelve goals in those six games.

However, there are still issues that need to be addressed. The Timbers have conceded 33 goals this season, tied for fourth worst in Major League Soccer. They also lack depth in several positions, which can become a huge problem if injuries arise during the stretch run of the year.

The summer transfer window opens on July 18, which presents an opportunity for General Manager Ned Grabavoy and the rest of Portland’s front office to fill the gaps. Let’s dive into the top priorities they should focus on.

#1 – New Starting CB

The Timbers started the season with Canadians Kamal Miller and Zac McGraw occupying the two center-back positions on Head Coach Phil Neville’s starting 11. Miller has shown flashes of greatness but hasn’t put it all together yet. McGraw, meanwhile, has not lived up to expectations so far.

The other alternatives on the roster consist of Dario Zuparic and Miguel Araujo, who have been inconsistent and unable to provide stability in defense.

The team desperately needs to improve its defense, and signing a new starting central defender might be a good place to start. This player would ideally bring leadership and stability to the backline, qualities that are lacking in current options.

#2 – Young Midfielder

Portland’s midfield situation doesn’t get talked about enough. Diego Chará never seems to age, but he’s 38, and father time is undefeated.

David Ayala has looked very promising this season and shows potential to be a cornerstone for the future. However, the team still needs more depth and youthful energy in the midfield to prepare for Chará’s inevitable decline. Making this acquisition sooner rather than later will help ensure a smooth transition when that time comes.

#3 – Winger Depth

Dairon Asprilla has recently been linked to a move to Colombian side Atlético Nacional, which would leave the Timbers thin on the wings. Outside of starters Santiago Moreno and Antony, the only winger on the squad would be Marvin Loria if Asprilla leaves the club, who has struggled over the past couple of seasons.

If Portland wants to make a deep playoff run this season, it must add more offense to its bench. This would take the load off Moreno and Antony and provide coverage for any injuries that may happen later in the year. Adding more quality attackers also increases competition, which is always a good thing.

The Timbers have many outstanding players on their roster already, and the potential to acquire even more talent in the near future should have fans excited for the remainder of the season. However, there is still a lot of soccer to be played before the summer transfer window opens next month. The Green and Gold will return home to Providence Park to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps this Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
