Portland Winterhawks Making News During The Offseason

Cross Hanus was added to the USA Men’s under 17 Gretzky/Hlinka Tournament to be held in Czech Republic from  August 5 – 11. Cross was a strong point getter during his time last summer with the Men’s Selects under 17 development camp where he registered 13 points in earning a spot on the All-Star team. He then added an assist in the All-Star game, which landed him as one of the players to be a part of Team USA in the Czech Republic.

Seth Jarvis will also try to be in Czech too as he tries to crack the Canada roster. Seth will try his luck later this month.

The Portland Winterhawks were also busy with the signing of Rich Campbell to a new contract. Campbell, was a major force in the NHL as a Strength and Conditioning Coach of the New York Islanders from 1996 – 2006. He joined the Hawks back in 2009 when the team was sold to Bill Gallacher and has been completely responsible for far fewer injuries that seemed to plague the Hawks. During the transition time from Ken Hodge to the group held by Bill Gallacher, there were a rash of injuries that ate up an incredible amount of man games, usually owing to shoulder injuries. Those have since dissipated and the Hawks seem to have far fewer injuries overall under Rich Campbell’s watch.

Add Jake Gricius to the growing list of Winterhawks invited to NHL Camps. as he heads to the San Jose Sharks who have had previous Portland Winterhawks in their fold. The Hawks also have ten players who are listed as prospects on the Winterhawks roster, who have yet to sign with the team but are under the Winterhawks protected list.

The Winterhawks have also announced that the weekend of August 18 will be a Charity Golf Tournament to raise funds for the Winterhawks Amateur Hockey Association and also Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. There will be a Charity dinner that Sunday with auctions, which will include signed alumni jerseys. There will also be comedian Kelly Taylor, who will use his wit to get people in a jovial mood. Kyle Gustason and Ian Stanfield will coordinate the event and one should contact kyleg@winterhawks.com for further information.

There is still no confirmation on the dates of Training Camp or the Neely Cup, but because the tournaments for the away games have been announced, it should be in the week of August 17 to 23.

The Portland Winterhawks Booster Club has announced three possible Fan Excursions to away games this season. Kamloops, Victoria and a three game US Division battle will be on tap for this season. For more information check out www.pwhbc.com or email pwhbc@comcast.net.
