How Much Money Did Companies Spend On Super Bowl Ads In 2020?

The Super Bowl is known as a clash of titans that gathers millions of spectators across America to watch…the commercials?

Whle some Super Bowls have turned out to be less exciting than others, it cannot be denied that the Super Bowl commercials have not failed to form a successful rivalry year after year.

The reason we’re all here?

It’s commonly known that office talk following the Super Bowl does not revolve around the game itself. While it might have been unthinkable 10 years ago, today it must be admitted that the most lasting post-Super Bowl conversations revolve around the advertisements.

Since 2000, Super Bowl advertising has gotten more expensive. 2019’s match up between the Patriots and Rams brought in slightly less cash than 2018’s bout between the Eagles and Patriots. But, how did things fare following this down turn when we come to 2020?

Super Bowl Advertisement: the Numbers

Companies spent a combined amount of $336 million dollars on advertising in the 2019 Super Bowl. If that sounds like a tremendous number, you’ll be surprised to hear that it’s down from 2018’s figure of $341Million. And that follows after the all-time peak in 2017 to the tune of $390 Million on Super Bowl advertising!

In 2018, 91 commercials broadcasted during the Super Bowl. (https://www.statista.com/statistics/251585/super-bowl-advertising-spending/). The broadcasting network, CBS, was charging a record-breaking $5.25 million per 30-second spot.

Advertising Revenue in 2020

Following a slight downturn in revenue in 2019, we saw another increase in 2020. A thirty second commercial cost $5,600,000 in 2020, up $300,000 from 2019.

Who where the biggest spenders in 2020? Anheuser Busch InBev came out on top, spending $41 million. The non-alcoholic giant Pepsi followed at $31 million, Procter & Gamble made a scratch at $30 million, and Amazon delivered $26 million to CBS’s doorstep.

But for many companies, the investment is a good one. The heavy price tag is a purchase not only of the immediate audience, but also those who will watch the “best of” competitions and vote on, argue over, and reenact their favorite commercials

How did we get here?

Those of you who can remember back to 2000 may remember an increase in new internet companies (a.k.a., dot coms) who had a lot of money and, compared to brick and mortar companies, very little overhead. Some of these ads were – shall we say?- memorable for their low-budget film techniques. That year saw an increase of over 25% in the costs for Super Bowl commercials, and the price has increased ever since.

Gambing on Advertisements?

Some people actually place bets on advertising. Within the sports betting worldprops bets can cover anything – from what commercial will be shown first to what color Gatorade will be poured on the winning coach.
