If You’re Too Hurt To Exercise, Recover With Whole Body Vibration (Yes, Vibration)

Your doctors says you need to exercise or do resistance training to get better but your injury or pain makes it difficult or almost impossible. You’re not alone. Many with diabetes, obesity, or joint pain face this issue every day. Fortunately, there are other treatment options that can help, including massage, chiropractic and whole body vibration.  A study published in the Endocrine Society’s journal Endocrinology concluded that whole body vibration can mimic the muscle and bone health benefits of regular exercise.

When you think of whole body vibration, you might picture people strapped to machines with a belt around their waist shaking their gut incessantly. Rest assured. It’s not the crazy vibration belts of the 70s. Instead, patients step onto a machine that looks similar to a standing scale that has handlebars. The platform underfoot vibrates and gently shakes the whole body. The vibration stimulates and activates muscles, joints and reflexes, in ways that regular exercise can’t.

“Even pro athletes use this technology,” said, Dr. Joe Graffeo. “Because it stimulates the muscles in new ways it can actually strengthen and tone the body as muscles become stronger. For our patients, this may mean quicker recovery, or restimulation of areas of the body that had lost range of motion or the ability to move.”

Rehabilitation After an Injury

When injured, often times, the person will stop moving using the leg, joint, back, or neck, for instance, because it hurts. Medically speaking, the injured muscle or soft tissue then begins to atrophy, or degenerate.  To combat this, doctors, physical therapists and chiropractors prescribe rehabilitation exercises to help you recover and to improve the tone, strength and flexibility of your muscles and joints. Whole body vibration can provide the same benefits without having to put any stress on the body or the injured area.

Whole Body Vibration

Whole body vibration is a state-of-the-art therapeutic technology that supports a wide range of health and fitness goals. Whole body vibration has increased overall wellness and quality of life for many people in a wide variety of settings, including NASA astronauts in space.

The equipment utilizes a low-impact, oscillating platform to produce up to 30 involuntary reflexes per second, activating over 90 percent of all muscle groups in the human body at once. In other words, the muscles contract and relax multiple times during each second of vibration. This treatment applies almost no stress on the joints, ligaments or tendons.

Whole body vibration can be used to:

  • Increase circulation

  • Reduce joint pain

  • Increase flexibility and range of motion

  • Faster healing

  • Improve balance

  • Increase bone density

At Graffeo Chiropractic Clinic, we consider whole body vibration as a treatment options for:

  • Back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Injury rehabilitation

  • Whiplash

  • Headaches

  • Balance

  1. Awesome post. I’ve been using vibration plates for over 5 years now and they’ve given me many years back in terms of bone density and muscular strength! And most people wouldn’t realize it, but there are tons of models under $200 that work great. You don’t need to drop $5k on a Power Plate to get the benefits.
