Sabrina Ionescu is no doubt one of the most successful point guards in NCAA history.
Everyone knew that Ionescu was going to do great things for the women’s basketball program as she entered the University of Oregon. In high school, she was named the national player of the year for both USA Today and MaxPreps. Following her senior season, she played in the McDonald’s All-American game and received MVP for her stellar performance. Later, she played in the Jordan Brand All-American game. Last but not least, ESPNW ranked her the No. 4 recruit in the nation.
Ionescu is currently a sophomore point guard for the University of Oregon women’s basketball team. As a freshman, she not only helped her team get to the Elite Eight but she was one of the most important players throughout their successful season. After her rookie season, she achieved:
-US Basketball Writers Association Freshman of the Year
-ESPNW Freshman of the Year
-Pac-12 Freshman of the Year
-All Pac-12
-Pac-12 all Freshman
-Pac-12 all-Tournament Team
-NCAA all Bridgeport Regional Team
Those are just a few of her major accomplishments that she achieved throughout her freshman season. She recorded four triple-doubles that season, breaking the NCAA single-season record.
Going into her sophomore season, no one could image what else Ionescu could do to top her freshman season. After she led the Ducks to a win over USC last week, goducks.com caught up with Ionescu and this is what she had to say: “This year, I’m definitely coming out shooting the ball confidently, getting into passing lanes- definitely trying to make an impact right when the game starts, to give us good momentum.”
Sabrina Ionescu is going to do some amazing things for this women’s basketball program, and what is even scarier, is that she has two more years to grow as a player and lead this team to even greater heights.
