Regarding midweek games, it’s tough to see if the visitors can get up for the game with travel and school interruptions. It does happen with things like the swings for all teams, but games midweek, in general, are closer to home so that while players may be tired, they can get some rest at the venue and home to be ready for school.
A midweek game up in Everett is tough regardless, with a team they face having single-digit losses and a goals-against average that is tops in the league.
The Portland Winterhawks also having to contend with a couple of injuries, and Everett having their number over the season, can’t help. However, any team can be beaten at any time, and the Hawks aimed to do just that,
Kyle Chykowski started the night off with just 40 seconds ticked off the clock to give the Hawks the very early 1-0 lead. Everett tied it up just past the 15-minute mark on the powerplay, but Chykowski snuck in another less than 30 seconds later in a period where they blitzed two shots against Portland’s 9.
Everett tied it up just 11 seconds into the second period. However, it took all of 12 seconds to elapse before Josh Zakreski put the biscuit in the basket to once again give the Hawks the lead. Just two minutes later, Tyson Yaremko finished off the night for the Hawks while on the powerplay. Although Everett would score midway through the third, it was the Winterhawks who claimed victory 4-3 over the Everett Silvertips.
On the night, Everett finished with 51 shots, and Marek Schlenker stopped all but three to lead his team to victory. The score was 51- 25, favoring Everett. Both teams scored one powerplay goal: Portland had 3 chances, and Everett had 4.
The Hawks play two remaining contests at home before the Christmas break, Seattle on Saturday (televised) and then versus Spokane in another midweek contest.
The Hawks announced some big numbers for their “Season of Giving” – 16,973 furry friends were recorded at Teddy Bear Toss, a Hawks record. The Winterhawks also collected enough food in November for 18,000 meals in monetary donations and over 1900 pounds of food during their Hawks fight hunger. The Fox 12 Toy Drive collected over 3,200 toys for kids this Christmas as well.
Portland signed 19-year-old Joel Plante, who has played the last three years with the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL and is expected to be in the lineup this weekend. With both Hudson Darby and Ryan Miller sidelined week to week, Portland needed to add additional personnel to the roster.
