Ironman World Championship 2018 – Leading Contenders

The 2018 Ironman World Championship kicks off again this Saturday at Kona. Both fields look as strong as ever despite Frodeno not taking part. Punters have been using the latest sign up bonus at caesar online casino and supporting their favourite racers for success. Here we cover some of the leading contenders for victory.

Men’s

Patrick Lange

The German will be kicking off as the defending champion and favourite for the 2018 edition of the race. The 32-year-old was a former professional duathlete and has been a revelation since starting Ironman. In 2016 Patrick really burst on to the scene when running into third in this very race. In the process he posted a marathon time of 2:39:45, which was the marathon record for the race.

He then returned last season in winning this race and in the process breaking the record time for the World Championship in 8:01:40. Patrick again put in a stunning marathon with a time of 2:40:00 and if he can repeat this then is it his to lose? He is a strong favourite for success.

Lionel Sanders

The Canadian is many peoples favourite Ironman athlete following his motivational story to the top. He has continued to improve over the years and holds the second fastest Ironman time in history. The 30-year-old is known for his guts and will to suffer in his races, which is why it is surely just a matter of time before a Kona victory.

Lionel is heading into the race in impressive form and placed second behind Lange last season. Could this be the year Lionel lands the World Championship?

Women’s

Daniela Ryf

The Women’s race is all about the Swiss star, Daniela Ryf. She is a four time 70.3 World champion that includes a success earlier this season. She seems to have no weaknesses so it will come as a huge shock were the 31-year-old to be defeated.

Daniela has had a faultless build-up winning all her starts and is coming in as the three time defending champion. This is following victories in 2015, 2016 and last year. Is it just a question of how fast she can go rather than if she can be beaten?

Lucy Charles

If anyone can challenge Ryf then it is likely to be the improving Lucy Charles. She is still just 25 years of age, so has her best years ahead of her but is already at the top of the sport. She brings in an extensive background from swimming and was challenging for a place at the 2012 Olympics. This has stood her well in Ironman and she is the dominant swimmer. Could she break the Swim record in Kona after coming so close last season?

Charles is likely to gain a big lead from the swim and try to push the bike. Could she hold on from Ryf and shock the Ironman world? Charles will be looking to improve on her second last season when entering as a rookie. A stunning achievement from the British star.
