It’s a slow news week for the Portland Winterhawks as they played just one game this past week, and it was a chippy affair. This time it was the opposition in the Everett Silvertips that played the revolving penalty box door with 10 infractions, two of those resulting in four minute power plays. The Hawks were unable to convert on any of these and while they gave up three of their own, they didn’t give up power-play goals either. Portland heavily outshot Everett by nearly double and lost the game 4-2 on an empty-net goal with just about 30 seconds left.
Most of the action happened off the ice with Rylan Bettens leaving the Hawks just a few days after being traded and the Continental draft choice most likely reverted to Portland from Brandon. No information on Betten’s decision was made public, so the Hawks now stand at 23 skaters, two goaltenders, 13 forwards and eight defencemen.
Cody Glass, was named to the Canada Russia Series, as expected, which will run six games starting in early November. As a member of Team WHL, Glass will be eligible to play the first two games of the series on November 5 in Kamloops, BC and November 6 in Vancouver, BC. Glass will not miss any Hawks games during his time away.
Seth Jarvius will miss games as he plays in the U17. The team of 66 will be divided into three teams, which will represent Canada as they go against the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the United States, the Twin Cities, Saint John and Quispamsis, New Bruswick. The Pre-tournament starts Thursday, November 1, and ends on November 10, which means Seth will miss five games for the Hawks as he takes part in the tournament.
The CHL Poll came out with the top team being listed as the top team in the CHL with just one loss after 12 games. The Victoria Royals at 7-1 come in number four. The Vancouver Giants, who will be the Hawks next opponent, came in sixth with nine wins, one loss and one overtime loss. Seattle takes an honorable mention at six wins, one loss and one overtime loss in the poll. The Raiders moved up a spot, the Royals slid two spots, while the Giants also moved up a spot.
