Let’s Take A Moment To Bow Down To Sue Bird

This year’s game five performance against the Phoenix Mercury solidified Sue Bird as a Seattle sports legend. If you weren’t watching the WNBA Western Conference semi-finals, then you missed a truly legendary performance. To begin with, she broke her nose in the 2nd quarter of game four and missed the rest of the game. Nevertheless, she strapped on a face mask and was ready to play in game five.

The Storm were trailing by four points with about six minutes left in the 4th quarter when Bird entered the game. She went on an absolute tear and made four three-pointers and scored 14 points in the final minutes of the game, propelling the Storm to victory. Even though Breanna Stewart was the best player throughout the series, Bird stole the show with her 4th quarter performance.

After Seattle’s remarkable series win against Diana Taurasi, Brittany Griner, and the Phoenix Mercury, the Storm went on to capture the WNBA title by sweeping the Washington Mystics in three straight games. The championship was the third title in the Storm’s franchise history. Bird has been the point guard for all three of Seattle’s WNBA championships.

Bird’s list of accomplishments are absolutely insane. To go along with her three WNBA Championships, she also has won four Olympic gold medals with the U.S Women’s basketball team, two NCAA Championships with the University of Connecticut, two-time Europe SuperCup Champion, four-time EuroLeague Champion, and a five-time Russian National League Champion.

She also has a long list of personal achievements including being named an eleven-time WNBA All-Star, five-time WNBA First Team selection, three-time WNBA Second Team selection, all-time WNBA assists leader, and a member of the WNBA All-Decade team.

Bird has also been loyal to Seattle throughout her entire career. Even though she does have three championships with the Storm, there were years where Seattle couldn’t get past the first round.  The Storm have usually been good since their inaugural season however an elite player like Bird could have joined whatever team she wanted.

Bird should be included in the list of Seattle’s greatest athletes with the likes of Ken Griffey Jr, Gary Payton, and Russell Wilson. The only difference between Bird and all the other Seattle greats is that she has more championships than everyone else combined.
